Waterfront Market Dubai
The Waterfront Market, once known as the Deira Fish Market along the Deira Corniche in Dubai, is a bustling and vibrant marketplace that captures the essence of Dubai’s rich maritime heritage.
I have heard so much about the Deira Fish Market, one of Dubai’s famous markets. So although I was leaving Dubai the next day, and still had a lot on my to-do list, as a seafood lover, I knew there was no way I would miss visiting this market. So I dragged my cousin who was acting as my “tour guide”, on this particular trip to the Fish market. It was totally, totally worth the trip and turned out to be much more and much better than I anticipated!
About The Waterfront Market
This market is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. It is divided into sections, Fish and seafood, Meat and poultry, Fruits and vegetables and Dry goods and spices, then there are the Cafes and Restaurants.
The Waterfront Market spreads over 120,000 square metres, fully air-conditioned, with odour control, and state-of-the-art, hygienic conditions.
The Fish section is open 24 hours a day with about one or two hours set aside for deep cleaning.
History of The Waterfront Market
Dubai Waterfront Market used to be The Deira Fish Market which closed its doors in 2017 and was replaced by this new market called the Waterfront Market. The new market keeps the charm of the old while adding modern touches, making it a special place where tradition and new ideas come together.
A Seafood Paradise
Waterfront Fish Market has an extensive selection of fresh seafood. Early every morning, local fishermen bring in their catch of the day. Fish also come in from different parts of the world e.g. Norway. The sheer variety of seafood available is both diverse and impressive. It includes different kinds of fish (Barracuda, Red Snapper, Kingfish, Grouper), crabs, Squids, octopus, lobsters, prawns, and others.
Different fish products are sold live, fresh or dried.
Whether you’re cooking at home or just love seafood, this is the place to be. The vendors are friendly and can help you choose and clean your seafood in a clean and sanitary section of the market.
More Than Just Seafood
The Waterfront Market has so much to offer. The sections for fresh fruits and vegetables are bursting with vibrant colours from the freshness of the fruits and vegetables, the assortment is diverse.
In the meat and poultry section, every part of the animals is displayed: Head, brain, hoofs, entrails, tail nothing is left out.
In the Dry Goods and Spices section, there is a rich and diverse selection, you will find spices, grains, nuts, dried fruits, pickles and freshly baked bread and pastries.
I was astounded by the sheer variety of dates available. I bought more than sixteen varieties of dates, from fresh to dried, all delicious. The seller was kind enough to label each variety for me. I also picked up a few jars of date syrup.
Eating and Fun
After shopping at the Waterfront Market, Deira, you can enjoy a meal at one of the market’s many food spots. From casual to fancy, there are plenty of places to eat, offering a variety of dishes from local to international. I didn’t have time to indulge in the delicious-looking food because we were in a hurry at this point.
Shopping at the market
Things to note about shopping at the market, transactions are mostly cash, and there are ATMs available. For most vendors, prices are negotiable. There is ample car parking available.
As I said before, the level of cleanliness and hygiene is astounding. Plenty of accessible toilets are available.
Visit the Market
The Waterfront Market is open every day from early morning to late evening. It’s a great place to visit whether you love food, enjoy different cultures, or want a unique shopping experience.
