Homemade pizza sauce can be made with or without tomatoes. It can be cooked or raw. In Nigeria, we make our pizza with tomato based sauce. That being said, there is no hard and fast rule to what goes in there or not, it all depends on your taste.
This pizza sauce uses tomato puree (tomato paste). With tomato paste sauce, you cut the time and effort of making the sauce to a fraction of the time. The taste is delicious and it looks great.
If you want to go the whole hog of making the sauce from fresh tomatoes, which tastes fresh and lovely, you will find my Fresh tomato sauce a go-to recipe.
Season pizza sauce very lightly because you don’t want the taste to overpower the crust and the toppings.
To make homemade pizza sauce:
6 tablespoons tomato puree 1 cup water 1/2 teaspoon onion powder* 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon thyme 1/4 teaspoon rosemary dry chili pepper (optional)
Put all ingredients in a pot. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to simmer for 30 minutes till bubbly and thick.
Use your delicious sauce on your pizza.
Note:
- In the absence of onion powder, use a dry mill to grind dry shallot or dry onion. You can also cut fresh onions into large chunks, remove the pieces when the sauce is ready.
